So Wednesday night I am driving to work and approaching the tolls to the upper level of the George Washington Bridge. All of a sudden my Z jerks violently to the right. I see this big white work truck pass me on my left. I quickly put 2 and 2 together and realized this guy just hit me as he tried to pass me. Keep in mind we are in a lot of traffic as we approach the bridge. I pull up along his left side and start flashing lights and honking my horn. I get the guys attention and let him know he just hit me. The guy looks shocked as I instruct him to pull over so we can exchange info. He first tries to tell me his wife is dying in the hospital and he can't stop. I was smart enough to write down his licence plate and let him know that I would call the cops if he didn't pull over. Then he offers to pay me for the damage showing me $40. I am no auto body expert but I did know that it would cost more than $40 and I insisted he pull over as soon as we were through the toll. He decides to blow through the EZ pass lane. I have an EZ pass so I follow. He then takes off violently into traffic. Knowing that there are always Port Authority cops near the tolls, I pull over to the far right and find one. I inform him I have just been involved in a hit and run, give him the color of the truck, as well as the plate. He takes off after the guy who maybe made it half way across the bridge in the heavy traffic. I sit and wait. About 20 minutes later I see the cop with his cherries on coming back over the bridge with the guy who took off right behind him. To make a long story a little shorter, they bring the guy back who claims I never tried to stop him, doesn't have a receipt for the toll, and is driving a truck with false plates. It didn't take much convincing to show the cops I was telling the truth. Now the guy wants to make a deal with me and is more than willing to pay for the damage out of pocket. I wisely tell him he will be hearing from my insurance company, and that I might have been more receptive toward letting him pay if he hadn't tried to run. The cop finishes his report and tells me that the guy won't be able to pay for my car anyway. He slapped him with at least 7 summonses including: hit and run, running a toll, faulty registration and faulty plates. He also lets me know that they will take the truck until the registration issue is worked out. So in the end I am glad that the Police were involved. I was also toying with the idea of repainting the Z. Now seems like the perfect time to do so. The damage isn't too bad. I have a big white stripe on my driver side rear quarter panel. I just can't believe the nerve of some people. I will try to post pictures as soon as the weather lets up a bit. I will also be getting an estimate or two some time this weekend. Thanks for letting me vent.
